Yep. It's official. You can get one...some time in 2010.
That rod was found on the order sheet but isn't advertised or apparently at the show- because it isn't built yet. Some thought it was a typo on the order sheet. I called around and before you can even think about having one in your hands, they have some rod design tweaks and then production tweaks to complete.
The 10' 4 weight BIIx is on pre-order only (I ordered mine). And frankly DO NOT expect it before spring. I have no idea WHEN it will be delivered, but I'm thinking of it as a spring-time rod.
Just call your dealer and ask to pre-order...then forget about it until 2010.

I look forward to hearing your report on the new Winston 10’ rod. For the time being I will keep fishing my Grays 10’ 3wt. After the new Winston stick comes out I will test one and then decide if I should get one. I give Winston kudos for bringing out a new rod like that and I think it will sell well. |

Hey Boron Boy!!!!
When you get your shiny new magical boron long rod you should catch a flight up and we can have a four weight fish off!!! You and your space age 10' boron against me and my old worn out 10' WT!!!! You'd have to forget all that Czech nymphing stuff with more than one fly though cause we like to give the fish a fair chance here and only one hook is allowed in most of our trophy waters.
I sure hope you ordered that new BIIx with an extra tip!!!!!
You know any pilots???? There are lots of UPS and FedEx flights that run non-stop from Louisville to Anchorage!!!! |

Jippy...this is the news I have been longing to hear for a couple of years.
If that rod becomes like "just a longer version" of the existing #4 9', then it will be the "Micronymphing Staff of God"...Send it to France and they will not return it
The master of this sport...long leaders and small nymphs in a "high stick" way of searching water upstream.
Yep, I will order one, that's for sure.
I have several "tip heavy" and deep flexing 10' #3 rods...and for the fishing described above, those slower/tip heavier rods are not for the finest game of accurate micro nymphing with "dry fly lenght leaders".
Great news, again. thanks Winston

This is my first really long rod, so i won't have anything to compare it to. If I hadn't found this rod, I would have moved on to another company within the week to get that rod spec. I was shown a great little trout fishery that begs for this configuration (exclusively midge biters on extra thin tippet and very wide current lanes). I'll be fishing that stream on Friday actually on my way back from a business trip, unless it's flooded out. Massive rains on this half of the country. _________________ Go fish. |

Good luck on the fishing trip. I leave for a 10 day trip this weekend. The East Walker is screaming out for me. Then its on to the Truckee and Little Truckee for a few day. I'm glad fall is here even if the temp was 105 today. Its to bad you can't send some of that rain out west, we could use it.

Sheez I hope that never happens again. I have taken a lot of precautions- a rod backpack, rod locks, and boat rod leashes.

As home to the UPS World Hub, I would think I could hitch a ride. But I think they stopped that passenger service some time ago.
I know plenty of cute airline stewardesses. So yes I can get a discounted fair through Delta. I'll look into it, for real. If you remember John from the Smokies? His wife is a stewardess with high seniority. I might need her pull to bring a 10' rod and fly line on board! _________________ Go fish. |

Hey! Isn't boron from the space age??? It's been around for quite awhile and was tried in fly rods by several different manufacturers. None seem to have perfected it like Winston though.
Being with you when you lost your rod tip affected me for life. Walking the trail to the launch point today I checked my rod bag several time to make sure I had both pieces.
A four piece ten foot rod shouldn't be too bad to carry on a flight. Wouldn't the sections be 30 inches long? If you can find a non-metal carrying case you could easily be within the 45 inch limit.
I think they call them flight service representatives these days!!!!
Sure I remember John. He was fun to fish with. I thought I was destined for a gift from heaven when I walked along Thunder Creek and low and behold there was a beautiful Winston fiberglass rod on a tree stump with no one around!!!! I was gonna haul it back downstream to you, but then I figured John knew where it was and he would freak if he came back to that stump and it was gone!!!!!! |

Well the trick is to only use boron in the butt section since the butt does nothing for the cast other than get it out from your body and adding speed from the lever. Like was explained last week to me, all the technology and precision goes into the final 2/3s. Try taking the butt section off and it still throws good loops fine.
(light short bamboo and DL4 not included)
Yes the loss is a tragedy. I can't believe someone hasn't turned it in to the local shop.
I used to loose the rod socks and find them snagged on a tree in the stream!
And I'm glad you didn't move my glass rod. John would have crapped. You got chance to fish it didn't you??? I love that one.
I bought that orvis rod bpack you suggested. As long as it stays cool, it may help taking multiple rods plus I'll pack the waders for the hike.
I'm buying that 10' sight unseen. It's good to be able to trust Winston that they will bring a great product to market. Worth the premium!
I know they are brushing up the design on the 10'. Probably debating on how close to space the guides and how many guides. _________________ Go fish. |

Hey David
Anymore inside info on the 10' 4wt 2X - don't suppose a 10' 3wt is also on the drawing board. Recently watched an expert Czech nymphing with a 10' 3wt, very interesting.

Czech nymphing is very great way of fishing, I have done this for some years noe, and have to say quite successfully
I have many 10' #3 rods that are deep flexing, and somewhat heavy tip.
My guess is that the new 10' #4 will make a very good czech nymphing rod also, in addition to be very, very fine action for the more "french style/ long leader nymphing/high stick"....
A #3 10' from BIIx taper would probably be too light and maybe too much flex....a BIIMX 10' #3 maybe better...
But my guess is that Winston make this rod perfect in 4wt...it is still lighter than most 10' #3 on the market

I saw a post recently on rod ratings for 5wt rods on the common cents system.
Most of the Winston rods were rated 1 below, and most of the others with a few exeptions were between 2 and 4 weights heavier!
In this case the 10' #4 would be equal to your "3" weight 10' !! |
